When searching the Internet and newspapers for tutoring ads I almost felt I'd been sent to a Hyper- food market with the sole instruction of, "buy some cereal." The choices of cereal seemed endless; so it is with tutoring ads in the sprawling state of California. Ads for tutoring are not just limited to tutors seeking students, but students seeking tutors, and schools seeking both. The economy has created a "perfect storm" in this regard. Traditional schools, faced with less funding have slashed after school tutorials; teachers can use the extra income. And two earner households want to make up for time they do not have for educational assistance for their kids. Then, there is the competition for scholarships and other financial grants. And added to the mix are ads which meet the requirement of employees for extra skills, languages or changes of skill sets. Ads also appear for home schooling and support groups for parents' of these students. In these and myriad other situations conditions dictate the need for tutors and tutoring.

Tutoring also involves ads relating to becoming a tutor! Also displayed are ads by brokers about how to buy tutoring schools! So before you even approach the thousands of ads which are posted you must: A) decide into what category you fall, and B) what you want to teach, and C) what you wish to learn. The process can seem daunting. Let's see if we can make the picture somewhat clearer in California.

Beginning at the upper levels, employees may want to change careers or improve skills to keep a job or find a new one. PhD candidates need coaching with their dissertation writing; students entering Law school need assistance with LSAT exams; prospective graduate students look for help on GMAT's and GRE's. Then the ads in high schools for SAT preparation appear. In California, as elsewhere, there is a dire need for science and math success and so there is work for tutors in these subject areas. Tutoring ads are listed in school newspapers and by guidance counselors if they still exist in financially strapped schools. And as with the online ads the subjects run the gamut from dance to driver education, from sports to spreadsheets, from yoga to horse jumping, mentors and mentees; and of course there exists a need to support classroom teaching in all subjects. In school and business a call for language improvement is paramount.

Google alone has 63 pages of California tutoring ads and could list dozens more pages! When looking at ads ask yourself some common sense questions about one-on-one instruction or groups being better for your student. Cost may be a consideration as studies show the range can be $10-$50 per hour. One thing is for sure: you can be ready to set aside a long weekend to choose among thousands of ads for tutoring in California.
